German entrepreneur, inventor and engineer known for patenting the method for producing sugar cubes and being the co-creator of the world's first operating example of the modern automobile engine. He and Nicolaus August Otto founded the first engine factory in the world, NA Otto & Cie. Their improvements on the gas engine won them the Grand Prize at the 1867 Paris World Exhibition.
