James Balog, sometimes referred to as Jim Balog, is an American photographer whose work explores the relationship between man and nature. Since the early 1980s, Balog has photographed subjects such as endangered animals, ancient forests in North America, and polar ice. His work aims to combine art and science to create creative, dynamic and at times shocking interpretations of our changing world. Balog's most famous project explores the impact of climate change on glaciers around the world. In 2007, he launched the Extreme Ice Survey, the largest survey of terrestrial imagery ever conducted on glaciers. National Geographic magazine featured Balog's work on ice in June 2007 and June 2010, and the project was featured in the 2009 NOVA documentary Extreme Ice as well as the 75-minute film Chasing Ice, premiered in January 2012. Balog Ice's book: Portrait of the World's Vanishing Glaciers summarizes the work of the Extreme Ice Survey until 2012 .
