James V. Kern is an American singer, songwriter, screenwriter, actor and director. Trained at Fordham Law School, Kern spent some time working as a lawyer. He sang with George Olsen Trio and appeared with the Olsen Orchestra in the musical Good News. From 1927 to 1939, he sang and wrote for the Yacht Club Boys quartet, and he appeared in a number of films. He became a screenwriter and then a director. In movies, he mainly produced "B" images, but after switching to television, he directed hundreds of episodes of dramas. He was one of the directors of I Love Lucy in the 1950s. He directed My Three Sons for most of the two seasons of the 1960s. When he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 57, several episodes of the series were only partially completed for the 1966/67 season. . Director James Sheldon was therefore brought in by the producers of the series to end the season. He joined ASCAP in 1955 .
