Maria Qamar is an artist and author of the book Trust No Aunty. Qamar was born in Karachi, Pakistan to a Bangladeshi father and mother from Gujarat, India. Both parents are chemists. She came into contact with both Bengali and Gujarati cultures when growing up. In 2000, when she was 9 years old, her family immigrated to Ontario, briefly residing in Scarborough. The family then moved to Mississauga, where they spent the remainder of their childhoods. She endured prejudice and bullying towards South Asian children in her school, especially after the September 11, 2001 attacks. So, as she later recalls, "I started going home and comic books about those experiences. But I would change the outcome. In my comics, I always had the last laugh." She matches both her Desi identity and the western subcultures of goth, punk rock and heavy metal. She moved to Toronto and took a job as a writer in the advertising industry. She didn't like it and she was fired around 2015.

Hatecopy is a visual artist whose pop art inspired by South Asian culture has helped her get on the cover of Elle Canada and acquire a 190,000-strong Instagram following. Trust No Aunty was a popular book that collected a lot of her work (2017).
