Robert Burton è uno scrittore inglese e studente dell'Università di Oxford, noto soprattutto per la sua enciclopedia The Anatomy of Melancholy. Nato nel 1577 in una famiglia aristocratica benestante, Burton ha frequentato due scuole superiori e si è iscritto all'Università di Brasenose, Oxford nel 1593, all'età di 15 anni. Burton ricevette i suoi diplomi MA e BD e nel 1607 si qualificò come tutor. Già nel 1603, Burton era infatuato dei suoi primi interessi letterari a Oxford, tra cui diversi poemi latini, un'opera teatrale precedentemente perduta eseguita e criticata dallo stesso re Giacomo I. , e la sua unica opera sopravvissuta: una satira accademica chiamata Philosophaster. Quest'opera, sebbene meno apprezzata del capolavoro di Burton, si distingue per "ricevere più attenzione della maggior parte degli altri esempi sopravvissuti di teatro universitario".
