George Rochberg is an American contemporary classical composer. Long as a serial composer, Rochberg abandoned this practice after the death of his teenage son in 1964; he claimed that this composing technique proved inappropriate to express his grief and found it not intended to express. In the 1970s, Rochberg's use of stamp snippets in his music sparked controversy between critics and his fellow composers. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania until 1983, Rochberg also served as the dean of the school's music department until 1968 and was appointed the first Annenberg Professor of Humanities in 1978.
