Harry Mortimer era un compositore e direttore d'orchestra inglese specializzato nella musica per banda di ottoni, uno dei più importanti cornettisti della sua epoca. Harry Mortimer è nato a Hebden Bridge, nello Yorkshire, suo padre era il direttore d'orchestra Fred Mortimer. Fred ha insegnato a Harry e ai suoi fratelli Rex e Alex a suonare la cornetta e anche a comporre. Più tardi Harry fu istruito da William Rimmer. Nel 1910 la famiglia si trasferì a Luton, dove Harry divenne cornet solista nella Luton Brass Band, e all'età di 14 anni divenne direttore della Luton Red Cross Junior Band.
