Octave Maus è stato un critico d'arte, scrittore e avvocato belga. Maus lavorò con il collega scrittore/avvocato Edmond Picard, e insieme a Victor Arnould e Eugène Robert fondarono il settimanale L'Art moderne nel 1881. Nel 1884 Maus fu eletto segretario della neonata Les XX, e le sue responsabilità includevano l'organizzazione di le mostre annuali. Nel 1893 Maus sostenne lo scioglimento di Les XX. Nel 1894 fondò La Libre Esthétique. Il compositore Poldowski era un vicino di casa e amico per tutta la vita di Maus.
