Edward Bellamy is the most famous American author, journalist and political activist with his utopia, A Look At The Past. Bellamy's vision of a harmonious future world inspired the formation of many "nationalist clubs" dedicated to the diffusion of Bellamy's political ideas. After working as a journalist and writing some mediocre novels, Bellamy published Looking Back in 1888. The Look Back was one of the most commercially successful books published in the United States in the 19th century, and it particularly attracted a frenetic generation of intellectuals from the dark side of the golden age. In the early 1890s, Bellamy founded a newspaper called The New Nation and began promoting solidarity between the various nationalist clubs and the emerging populist party. He published Equality, a sequel to Looking back, in 1897, and died the following year.
