In biology, adaptation has three related meanings. Firstly, it is the dynamic evolutionary process that fits organisms to their environment, enhancing their evolutionary fitness. Secondly, it is a state reached by the population during that process. Thirdly, it is a phenotypic trait or adaptive trait, with a functional role in each individual organism, that is maintained and has evolved through natural selection. Historically, adaptation has been described from the time of the ancient Greek philosophers such as Empedocles and Aristotle. In 18th and 19th century natural theology, adaptation was taken as evidence for the existence of a deity. Charles Darwin proposed instead that it was explained by natural selection. Adaptation is related to biological fitness, which governs the rate of evolution as measured by change in gene frequencies.

About Adaptation

A Los Angeles screenwriter becomes wrapped up in attempting to adapt 'The Orchid Thief' by Susan Orlean for the screen but continually fails. The film is loosely based off the book "The Orchid Thief."

Achievement of Adaptation

Nicolas Cage plays the lead and the lead's twin brother, Donald. Chris Cooper won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Role.

Top Facts You Did Not Know About Adaptation

Adaptive evolution in the human genome - Adaptive evolution results from the propagation of advantageous mutations through positive selection. This is the modern synthesis of the process which Darwin and Wallace originally identified as the mechanism of evolution.. Adaptive memory - Adaptive memory is the study of memory systems that have evolved to help retain survival- and fitness-related information, i.e., that are geared toward helping an organism enhance its reproductive fitness and chances of surviving.. Adaptive mutation - Adaptive mutation, also called directed mutation or directed mutagenesis is a controversial evolutionary theory.. Adaptive system - An adaptive system is a set of interacting or interdependent entities, real or abstract, forming an integrated whole that together are able to respond to environmental changes or changes in the interacting parts, in a way analogous to either continuous physiological homeostasis or evolutionary.... Anti-predator adaptation - Anti-predator adaptations are mechanisms developed through evolution that assist prey organisms in their constant struggle against predators.. Body reactivity - Body reactivity is usually understood as the body's ability to react in a proper way to influence the environment. Resistance of an organism is its stability under the influence of pathogenic factors. The body reactivity can range from homeostasis to a fight or flight response.. Evolutionary biology.
