John Tobias is een Amerikaanse striptekenaar, grafisch ontwerper, ontwerper van videogames en schrijver. Tobias is vooral bekend door het maken van de Mortal Kombat-serie samen met Ed Boon. Tobias tekent al van jongs af aan, geïnspireerd door strips. Op de middelbare school volgde hij weekendlessen aan de Art Academy of Chicago. Hij was een artiest in het stripboek The Real Ghostbusters voordat hij bij Midway Games kwam. Tobias zei dat zijn aanvankelijke carrièreplan was om manga-artiest te worden, maar de vooruitgang op het gebied van graphics maakte de videogame-industrie aantrekkelijker voor hem. Hij werkte aan de originele arcadeversie van Smash TV vóór het succes van Mortal Kombat in 1992. Tobias creëerde de plot, het thema en de setting voor de originele Mortal Kombat-serie; inclusief Outworld en Netherrealm.
