Norman "Bubby" Jones was een coureur in de USAC Sprint Car-serie, met 22 overwinningen, en lid van de National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, opgericht in 1998. Hij reed ook in de USAC Championship Car-serie, in de seizoenen 1977-1978, met twee carrièrestarts, waaronder de Indianapolis 500 uit 1977. Hij faalde in kwalificatiepogingen op Indy in 1978 en 1981. In 1980 vertrok "Ol' Bub" naar het westen om regelmatig deel te nemen aan de prestigieuze California Racing Association Sprint Car Series, met de Gas Chem Products Entry. Na als 2e te zijn geëindigd in de C.R.A. Point Standing, drie jaar op rij achter Dean Thompson, overtuigde Jones auto-eigenaar Dan Kazarian om te veranderen van het Stanton-chassis waarmee ze hadden gereden, en Jones zelf een nieuwe auto voor hen te laten bouwen. Het resultaat was dat Jones twee opeenvolgende C.R.A. Puntenreekskampioenschappen. In 1984 won Jones de felbegeerde Pacific Coast National Open in Ascot en hield hij een snel sluitende Steve Kinser tegen, ondanks dat hij met nog tien ronden te gaan blaren op de rechterachterband had.
