In 1996 kreeg hij een platencontract en bracht hij twee albums uit voor Columbia Records Nashville voordat een slopende aanval van virale encefalitis zijn carrière op pauze zette. Nadat hij in 2000 hersteld was van zijn encefalitis, hervatte Dodd zijn zangcarrière, waarbij hij ook toerde met Tim McGraw en Faith Hill. In 2002 bracht hij een derde album uit voor Columbia, gevolgd door nog twee albums voor Dualtone Records. In totaal heeft Dodd vijf studio-albums en een live-album uitgebracht, en negen singles in de hitlijsten van Billboard Hot Country Songs. Zijn best scorende single, "A Bitter End", piekte eind 1998-begin 1999 op nummer 26 in de country-hitlijsten en op nummer 88 in de Billboard Hot 100.
