Francis "Dick" Richard Scobee was een Amerikaanse piloot, ingenieur en astronaut. Hij werd gedood terwijl hij het bevel voerde over de Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, die tijdens de lancering van de STS-51-L-missie een catastrofale boosterstoring opliep. Hij behaalde een Bachelor of Science-graad in Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaarttechniek. Hij was een reciprocerende motormonteur voor de luchtmacht van de Verenigde Staten en diende als gevechtsvlieger in de oorlog in Vietnam. Scobee werd in januari 1978 geselecteerd voor NASA Astronaut Corps en voltooide zijn opleiding in augustus 1979. In afwachting van zijn eerste orbitale ruimtevlucht, diende hij als instructeurpiloot voor het 747-draagvliegtuig van de Shuttle. In april 1984 bestuurde hij de Challenger-missie STS-41-C, die met succes een satelliet ontplooide en een andere repareerde.
