Hij is vooral bekend om zijn personage, brandweerman Roy DeSoto, in serie 5. 1972-77 NBC Urgent! Tighe werd gecast als een ondersteunende rol in zijn eerste grote film in The Graduate of 1967. Na te hebben getekend bij Paramount en Universal, keerde Tighe's carrière zich af van restjes en subs toen hij in de rol van Roy DeSoto werd gecast in de film Urgent!. Na de Emergency!, verscheen Tighe op televisie met meerdere gasten in shows zoals Ellery Queen, Cos, The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew Mysteries en The Six Million Dollar Man.
