Mykolas Sleževičius is a Lithuanian lawyer, political and cultural personality and journalist. As one of Lithuania's most influential figures between the wars, he served as Lithuanian prime minister three times. Taking over as head of government at a difficult time in 1918 and again in 1919, Sleževičius was credited with preparing Lithuania for the wars to come and laying the foundation for the new state. Sleževičius was elected to the Lithuanian parliament, first to the constituent parliament, and later to the Seimas, four times. In 1926, as the representative of the Lithuanian Peasants Union, Sleževičius became Prime Minister for the third time. His government made important changes aimed at normalizing the situation in Lithuania, but reforms met with resistance from Catholic clergy, military officers and parliamentary opposition. .
