Paul Baumgartner is a Swiss pianist. Born in Altstätten, Switzerland, he studied piano and composed with Walter Braunfels at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and with Eduard Erdmann in Cologne, where he later taught. Fleeing from the Nazi rise, he moved to Basel, again in Switzerland, where he taught at the conservatory. An accomplished pianist, he was one of the musicians who gathered around cellist Casals and performed during the first Casals festival. He has recorded Bach sonatas for viola da gamba with Casals. Today, however, he is generally not remembered as a teacher, among his pupils Alfred Brendel, Karl Engel, Arie Vardi, Peter Efler and conductor Günter Wand. In 1962 he received the Kunstpreis der Stadt St. Gallen. He died in 1976 in Locarno, Switzerland. At the age of 12, Paul Baumgartner wrote Seven Seekers and Other Poems.
