Veli Selim Saarinen was a Finnish cross-country snowboarder, who competed in the 1928 and 1932 Olympics. In 1928 he finished fourth in the 18 km race. Four years later, he won a gold medal over 50 km and a bronze medal over 18 km, becoming the first Finnish bronze skier to win an Olympic gold medal. However, his greatest success was at the FIS Nordic Skiing World Championships, where he won six medals between 1926 and 1934, including three gold medals. On the national level, Saarinen won only two titles, surpassing 50 km in the years 1930–31. In 1934, he retired from competition and then coached the German and Finnish cross-country teams. In 1947-1968, he was also the general manager of the Finnish Ski Federation.
