Abebe Bikila
Shambel Abebe Bikila is an Ethiopian marathon runner who has consistently won the Olympic marathon. He was the first black man to win an African Olympic gold medal, winning his first gold at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome running barefoot. At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, he won his second gold medal. In return, he became the first athlete to successfully defend the title of the Olympic marathon. In both victories, he ran in world record time. Born in Shewa, Abebe moved to Addis Ababa around 1952 and joined the 5th Ethiopian Imperial Guard Infantry Regiment, an elite infantry division defending the Ethiopian Emperor. Engaged as a soldier before his sports career, he rose through the shambel ranks. Abebe has participated in a total of 16 marathons. He finished second in his first marathon in Addis Ababa, winning twelve more races and fifth in the Boston Marathon in 1963.
