Archibald Joseph Cronin, known as A. J. Cronin, is a Scottish physician and novelist. His most famous novel, The Citadel, is about a Scottish doctor in a Welsh mining village, who then rose through the medical ranks in London. Cronin was familiar with both sites, as a mine medical inspector and as a doctor on Harley Street. The book promoted some of the controversial medical ethics that helped inspire the National Health Service. Another of his famous mining novels, which takes place in the North East of England, is The Stars Look Down. Both were filmed, along with the Hatter's Castle, the Key to the Kingdom, and the Blue Years. His 1935 novel Country Doctor sparked a series of BBC radio and television series, Dr Finlay's Casebook, set in the 1920s. A series followed in 1993–96.
