She is a twentieth-century Ghanaian author who holds the distinction of being the first published African female dramatist. She was also a novelist and poet, winning the Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 1992 for her novel Changes and the World Leader Nelson Mandela Prize in 1986 for her poetry collection Someone Talking to Sometime.
