Angela Yvonne Davis is an American political activist, philosopher, scholar and author. She is a professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In terms of Marxist ideology, Davis is a longtime member of the American Communist Party and a founding member of the Correspondence Committee on Democracy and Socialism. She is the author of over ten books on class, feminism, race, and the United States prison system. Born into an African-American family in Birmingham, Alabama, Davis studied French at Brandeis University and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt in West Germany. A student under the direction of the philosopher Herbert Marcuse, a prominent figure of the Frankfurt School, Davis became increasingly involved in leftist politics. Returning to the United States, she studied at the University of California at San Diego, before moving to East Germany, where she completed her doctorate at Berlin Humboldt University.
