Aron Lee Ralston is an American outdoor athlete, mechanical engineer and motivational speaker famous for surviving an accident caused by cutting his arm. On April 26, 2003, while descending the Bluejohn canyon in southeastern Utah, he broke a rock, pinning his right wrist to the canyon wall. After five days, he was able to amputate his arm with a dull pocket knife, fight his way through the rest of the canyon, abseil a 65-foot drop, and walk 7 miles to safety. The incident was captured in Ralston's autobiography Between a Rock and a Difficult Place and was the subject of the 2010 movie 127 Hours, where he was played by James Franco. After the crash, he continued climbing and became the first person to climb all fourteen Colorado vehicles in the winter.
