Bernard Bailyn is an American historian, author and researcher specializing in the history of the revolution and the colonies in the United States. He has been a professor at Harvard since 1953. Bailyn has twice won the Pulitzer Prize for history. In 1998, the National Foundation for the Humanities chose him for the Jefferson Conference. He was awarded the 2010 National Medal for the Humanities. He specializes in American colonial history and the revolutionary era, focusing on merchants, demographic trends, loyalists and associates, transatlantic internationalism, and particular to the political ideas motivating the patriots. He is best known for his studies of republicanism and the academically changed Atlantic history in these fields. He was elected associate of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1963 .
