Brijmohan Mishra, commonly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj, is part of Handia dance, Allahabad Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Kathak dance in India. He is a descendant of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, including his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. Although dancing was his first love, he still practices Hindustani classical music and is a singer. After working with his uncle, Shambhu Maharaj at Bhartiya Kala Kendra, later Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, he remained head of the school later, for several years, until retiring in 1998 when he opened his own dance school, Kalashram, also in Delhi.
