Booker Taliaferro Washington is an American educator, author, speaker, and advisor to several presidents of the United States. From 1890 to 1915, Washington was the dominant leader of the African American community and the contemporary black class. Washington of the last generation of black Americans was born into slavery and became the main voice of former slaves and their descendants. They were recently oppressed in the South due to being stripped of their voting rights and Jim Crow's discrimination laws were enacted in the southern states after reconstruction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. a major advocate of African-American business and one of the founders of the National Black Business Federation. His base was the Tuskegee Institute, a black history college he founded in Tuskegee, Alabama. When the secessionist situation in the South reached its peak in 1895, Washington gave a speech, called the "Atlanta Compromise", which won national acclaim.
