R. Carlton Ward Jr. is a photographer for the National Geographic Association. The Edge of Africa is his first book, the result of eight months of living in the rainforest of Gabon. He recorded elephants from Mali to Mali for the cover of the Smithsonian Magazine and a chapter in the book National Geographic Great Migrations. His book Conservation Photography is the result of his master's thesis on ecology. In 2009, his book Florida Cowboys was published. He won a silver medal at the Florida Book Awards. Ward founded the Cultural & Natural Heritage Institute, a non-profit group that advocates for the protection of Florida's natural and cultural heritage through the arts. Ward was featured in the famous Photography Journal as part of a portfolio of three photographers working to save "America in danger of extinction". He helped organize and lead an expedition to the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Ward is a founding member of the International Federation of Conservation Photographers.
