Catharine Trotter Cockburn
Catharine Trotter Cockburn is an English novelist, playwright and philosopher. She writes about ethical philosophy, theological views, and has many correspondence. Trotter's work addresses a wide range of issues, including necessity, the infinity of space and nature, but she focuses on ethical issues. She believes that moral principles are not innate, but can be discovered by each individual through the use of God given reason. In 1702, she published her first major philosophical work, A Defense of Mr. Lock's [sic.] An Essay on Human Understanding. John Locke was so happy with this excuse that he donated money and books to his young lawyer through Elizabeth Burnet, who made Locke aware of Trotter's "defense" for the first time. His work caught the attention of William Warburton, who opened his last philosophical work. She also asked biographer Thomas Birch to help her compile a collection of her works.
