Bishop Dr. Charles Albert Tindley is an American Methodist pastor and gospel composer. Often referred to as the "Prince of preachers," he taught himself, became a pastor, and founded one of the largest Methodist congregations serving the African American community on the East Coast of the United States. Tindley's father is a slave, but her mother is free. Therefore, Tindley himself is considered free, but despite this he grew up among slaves. After the Civil War, he moved to Philadelphia, where he found employment in freight transportation. He and his wife Daisy attended Bainbridge Methodist Church St. Charles later became sexton, unpaid work. Never able to go to school, Tindley learned on his own and asked everyone to tutor. He enlisted the help of a Philadelphia synagogue on North Broad Street. to learn Hebrew and learn Greek by taking a correspondence course at Boston Theology School.
