Charles Freer Andrews is an Anglican priest and missionary, educator, social reformer and activist for India's independence. He became a close friend of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi and accompanied the struggle to liberate India. He was instrumental in persuading Gandhi to return to India from South Africa, where Gandhi played a leading role in India's civil rights struggle. C. F. Andrews is affectionately called by Gandhi the faithful apostle of Christ, after his initials C.F.A. For his contribution to the Indian independence movement, Gandhi and his students at St. John's University. Stephen, Delhi, named him Deenabandhu, or “friend of the poor”.
