Claude Fayette Bragdon was an American architect, writer and theater designer based in Rochester, New York, until World War I and then in New York. As the designer of New York Central Station and the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, as well as many other public buildings and private residences, Bragdon enjoys a national reputation as an architect. The progressive tradition is closely linked to Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. In collaboration with members of the Prairie School and other regional movements, these architects have developed new approaches to the planning, design and decoration of buildings using industrial engineering and construction at the same time reaffirmed the democratic tradition threatened by the rise of mass urban society. In numerous essays and books, Bragdon argues that only nature-based "organic architecture" can foster democratic community in industrial capitalist society.
