Clifford Charles Devlin Thorburn is a retired Canadian professional snooker. Nicknamed "The Grinder" for his slow, assertive play, he won the World Snooker Championship in 1980, beating Alex Higgins 18–16 in the final to become the sport's first modern era world champion outside the Kingdom. -United. Thorburn was a finalist in two other world championships, losing to John Spencer 21–25 in the 1977 final and 6–18 to Steve Davis in the 1983 final. Was in the second round meeting with Terry Griffiths in 1983, when he became the first player to have maximum break in a world championship game. He is the second player, after Davis, to take 147 breaks in professional competition. Other notable achievements for Thorburn included taking first place in the standings throughout the 1981-1982 season and winning three national championships, in 1983, 1985 and 1986
