Clifton Williams
Clifton Curtis "C.C." Williams, Jr., is a US naval pilot, test pilot, mechanical engineer, major of the United States Marine Corps, and NASA astronaut, who was killed in a plane crash; he never went to space. The crash occurred due to a mechanical breakdown of NASA's T-38 jet trainer, which he was flying to visit his parents in Mobile, Alabama. The power outage caused the flight controller to stop responding and although he activated the ejection seat it did not save him. He was the fourth astronaut in NASA's Astronaut Group 3 to die, the first two were killed in separate T-38 flights, and the third in the Apollo 1 fire earlier that year. The plane crashed in Florida near Tallahassee less than an hour after Patrick AFB left. Despite never taking part in a space flight, he was a backup pilot for the Gemini 10 mission, which took place in July 1966
