General Courtney Hicks Hodges was a senior officer and general in the US Army who commanded the First US Army during the Second World War's Western Europe Campaign. Hodges is a notorious "mustang" officer, promoted from fourth to general. Born in Perry, Georgia, he began studying at the US Military Academy, but dropped out after failing a geometry exam. He joined the army in 1906 as a soldier, quickly promoted to the rank of non-commissioned officer and received a commission after passing a competition in 1909. As a young man, Hodges served under Colonel John J. Pershing on the Pancho Mansion Expedition and became part of the first rescue mission in US military aviation history when helping to rescue a flight public trapped. He served as a battalion commander in France during World War I and received the Title of Excellent Service for his extraordinary heroism. In 1943, he was sent to England to serve under General Omar Bradley.
