Dan Shechtman is Professor of Materials Science Philip Tobias at Technion Institute of Technology - Israel, Deputy Director of the Ames Laboratory at the US Department of Energy, and Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University. On April 8, 1982, while on vacation at the US National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., Shechtman discovered the icosainary phase, opening up a new world of semi-cyclic crystals. Shechtman received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of semi-crystals, making him one of six Israelis to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
