Daniel Thomas Gillespie is a physicist best known for his 1976 formulation of the Simulation Randomization Algorithm, also known as the Gillespie Algorithm. SSA is a procedure for simulating the amount of time change of molecular populations in a chemical reaction system in a way that takes into account that molecules react with integers and in a way that is mostly random. Since the late 1990s, SSA has been widely used to simulate chemical reactions inside living cells, where small molecular populations of certain reactive species often invalidate the equations. Gillespie's initial deduction for SSA began by examining how chemical reactions actually occur in diluted, well-stirred gas.
