Edith Cavell
Edith Louisa Cavell is an English nurse. She is praised for saving the lives of soldiers on both sides indiscriminately and for helping around 200 Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium during World War I for which she was captured. She was charged with treason, convicted by an armed court and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for leniency, she was shot dead by a German firing squad. His execution was condemned around the world and widely publicized. The night before her execution, she said: "It is not enough to be patriotic. I must not be hostile or bitter towards anyone." These words were later engraved on a monument to her near Trafalgar Square. Her strong Anglican beliefs motivated her to help anyone in need, both German and Allied soldiers. She was quoted as saying, “I can't stop while there are lives to be saved”. The Church of England commemorates her in the Calendar of Saints on October 12
