Mary Edmonia Lewis, "Wildfire", is an American, African-American and Native American-hybrid sculptor. Born freelance in upstate New York, she worked most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first African-American sculptor to gain a reputation domestically and later internationally. It became famous in the United States during the Civil War; By the end of the 19th century, she was still the only black female artist to be involved and to some extent recognized by the American art line. In 2002, the scholar Molefi Kete Asante named Edmonia Lewis on his list of the 100 Greatest African Americans. His work is known for incorporating themes related to blacks and indigenous peoples of the Americas into neoclassical sculptures.
