Edwin Starr is an American singer and songwriter. Starr is best known for the Motown singles produced by Norman Whitfield in the 1970s, most notably the number one hit "War". Starr was born in Nashville and raised in Ohio, then lived in Detroit, singing for Ric-Tic and Motown Records. He was supported by the group that would later be known as "Black Merda". The group's Hawkins and Veasey performed most of their original hits on the Ric Tic label. Starr's songs "25 Miles" and "Stop the War Now" were also big hits, in 1969 and 1971. In the 1970s, Starr's base moved to Britain, where he continued to produce music and resided until his death.
