She has been called one of America's 100 most beloved children's writers, and some of her work has been requested to read in schools across the country. Speare was one of six writers to receive two Newbery Medals recognizing "the best contributions to American children's literature." In 1989, she received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her contributions to American children's literature.
