Erno Matti Juhani "Emppu" Vuorinen is a Finnish guitarist, best known as the founding and occasional member of the metal symphony group Nightwish. He is the eldest of a family of 5 children, has a twin brother and three younger sisters. He started playing guitar in a private school at the age of 12 and since then he has performed in various groups including Nightwish, Brother Firetribe, Barilari, Almah and Altaria. Vuorinen is above all a rhythm musician, often taking over the keyboard or the orchestral part of Nightwish songs. However, he also plays main and solo tunes. Vuorinen's solo techniques often include alternating selection, tapping, sliding, legato, and the use of small to extreme whammy bars; it also uses cleaning, although very rarely. His solos are more melodious than most metal bands, but sometimes he's choppy. Nightwish's first three albums contained more Vuorinen main guitar compositions than their subsequent albums.
