Erasmus Darwin is an English doctor. One of the Midlands' leading Enlightenment thinkers, he was also a natural philosopher, physiologist, abolitionist, inventor and poet. His poems cover a great deal of natural history, including a statement about the evolution and relationships between all forms of life. He is a member of the Darwin-Wedgwood family, which includes his nephews Charles Darwin and Francis Galton. Darwin is a founding member of the Lunar Society of Birmingham, a discussion group of pioneering industrialists and natural philosophers. He declined George III's invitation to become the king's physician.
