Ernest Orlando Lawrence is the pioneering nuclear scientist of the United States and the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1939 for his invention of the cyclotron. He is known for his work on the separation of uranium isotopes for the Manhattan Project, as well as for the founding of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A graduate of the University of South Dakota and the University of Minnesota, Lawrence received a doctorate in physics from Yale in 1925. In 1928 he was hired as an associate professor of physics at the University of California at Berkeley, becoming the youngest full professor there two years later. In his library one evening, Lawrence was intrigued by a scheme of an accelerator producing high-energy particles. He wondered how it would be possible to make it compact and came up with the idea of ​​a circular accelerator chamber between the poles of an electromagnet. The result is the first cyclotron.
