Eugenio Torre is a Filipino chess player. In 1974, at the age of 22, he became the first Asian to win the Grand Master title when he won a bronze medal at the chess Olympics in Nice, France. He is considered the best chess player the Philippines produced in the 1980s and 1990s, and has played for the Philippines at table 1 of the eighteen Chess Olympics. At a tournament in Manila in 1976, Torre was the only one to beat defending world champion Anatoly Karpov in a game that had become part of Philippine chess history. In 1982, he won a spot in the World Chess Championship matches, where he lost to Zoltan Ribli. He was Bobby Fischer's second player in the 1992 match against Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia.
