Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc is a German painter and printer, one of the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a magazine whose name would later become synonymous with the world of collaborating artists. His works for adults mainly depict animals and are known for their vivid colors. He was drafted into the German army at the start of World War I and died two years later at the Battle of Verdun. In the 1930s, the Nazis called him a degenerate artist in their persecution of modern art. However, most of his works survived WWII, ensuring his legacy. His work is currently exhibited in many famous galleries and museums. At auction, his large paintings drew large sums of money, with a record £ 12,340,500 for Weidende Pferde III.
