Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and politician. After escaping slavery in Maryland, he became the national leader of the Massachusetts and New York abolitionist movement, famous for his rhetoric and harsh anti-slavery. As a result, he was described by abolitionists of his day as a living example of the slave owner's argument that slaves were not mentally competent to function as independent American citizens. Likewise, the northerners of the day could hardly believe that such a great orator was once a slave. Douglass wrote three autobiographies, specifically describing his experiences as a slave in The Autobiography of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became a bestseller and was influential in promoting the cause of the abolition, as did his second book, My Bondage and My Freedom.
