Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben, also known as Baron von Steuben, was a Prussian and later an American military officer. He served as Inspector General and Major General of the Continental Army during the American War of Independence. He was one of the fathers of the Continental Army teaching them the basics of military exercises, tactics and discipline. He wrote the U.S. Army Rules of Order and Discipline, which served as a military maneuver manual for decades. He served as General George Washington's Chief of Staff in the closing years of the war. In 1780 von Steuben was elected a member of the American Philosophical Association.
