He began officiating in the NFL in 2003 as a field judge, and had a brief referee stint that year when crew chief Bernie Kukar was injured.
He refereed the first game following the 2012 NFL referee lockout, and received a standing ovation from the Baltimore Ravens' crowd.
He had three children with his first wife, and in 2013 got engaged to Lisa Mauro.
He is well known for enforcing a controversial rule that overturned a Calvin Johnson touchdown in 2010.
