George Carey
George Leonard Carey, Baron Carey of Clifton, is a retired Anglican bishop who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002, formerly Bishop of Bath and Wells. During his time as Archbishop, the Church of England was ordained the first female priest and the debate over attitudes towards homosexuality became more prominent, particularly at the Anglican Conference in Lambeth in 1998. In June 2017, he served resigned from his last official role in the Church after it was discovered he had covered up child abuse allegations against Bishop Peter Ball. In 2018, the UK Child Sexual Abuse Report found that Carey had seriously violated her Church's obligation to cover up child sexual abuse. In February 2018, Carey was authorized by Steven Croft, the Bishop of Oxford, to "celebrate", allowing him to preach and preside over churches in the diocese.
