George Crabbe
George Crabbe is an English poet, surgeon and pastor. He is known for his early use of realistic narrative and middle-class and working-class descriptions of lives and people. In the 1770s, Crabbe began his career as a trainee doctor, before becoming a surgeon. In 1780, he went to London to make a living by writing poetry. After experiencing serious financial difficulties and unable to publish his work, he wrote to the politician and author Edmund Burke for help. Burke was impressed with Crabbe's poems and promised to help him in any way possible. The two became close friends, and Burke greatly supported Crabbe both in his literary career and in building a role in the church. Burke introduced Crabbe to London's literary and artistic society, including Sir Joshua Reynolds and Samuel Johnson, who read The Village before it was published and made some minor changes. Burke secured Crabbe the post of chaplain to the Duke of Rutland.
